Portholme Church, Selby

You’ll find a warm welcome at Portholme Church. We will be very pleased to meet you in person! We invite you to join us on Sunday at 10:45am for worship … or pop in on a Monday morning between 10:00am and 12:00noon for a cup of tea or coffee on us. While our roots are in the Christian traditions of centuries past, we aim to be a thoroughly modern church that is also firmly fixed in the 21st century,
So, are we …

Accessible & Inclusive? Yes! We have worked hard to make Portholme Church accessible to everyone but we recognise that there is still more that needs to be done – we’re working on it! We firmly believe that ALL people are of equal value to God and we want all people to be equally able to participate fully in the life of Portholme Church. That's EVERYONE, no exceptions. We have partnered with Through the Roof's Roofbreakers project. You can find our page on their website here.

an “Eco” church? Yes! We have qualified for the Bronze Award of the A Roche Eco Church scheme and we’re working towards achieving our goal of “Net Zero Carbon”. We are also trying to encourage others to understand the benefits of caring for the environment.

a “fair trade” church? Yes! If you take up our offer to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee “on us”, it will be a fair trade “cuppa”. We support the Fairtrade Foundation.

a church that gives money away? Yes! Our aim is to support a range of local, national and international charities. Portholme Church and members of our congregation give thousands of pounds each year to help other organisations to continue their invaluable work. Here are some examples. Locally, we support Selby & District Foodbank who are working to combat poverty and hunger in our area. Nationally, we donate to The Fund for Human Need who make small cash grants to people throughout the UK who are destitute or vulnerable and where a small amount of money will make a big difference. Internationally, we support and promote the work of All We Can, a charity that “walk alongside local partners to help communities uncover their own solutions and their own potential” in Africa and India.

a part of the local community? Yes! Portholme Church is the “home” of many local organisations who hire our hall and facilities for their regular meetings. Choirs, societies and charities all hold their meetings and activities at Portholme Church – plus Blood Donors and families holding birthday parties.

warm & welcoming? Yes! We used to hold a “Coffee Morning” every Monday from 10am to 12noon but now we have changed it to a “Warm Welcome Space” where people can come for a free cuppa and connect with other people. When it’s cold outside and gas bills are soaring, for a couple of hours each week you can join us at Portholme Church where it’s warm and friendly. By the way, many other churches offer a “warm welcome” but in the wintertime, it can be freezing inside, too! Portholme Church’s sanctuary is centrally heated, fully carpeted and we have comfortable seats!

What about hymn books? We ditched the hymn books a decade or so ago! Yes there are some truly great traditional hymns which we still love to sing, but there are also lots of modern worship and praise songs being written today by people who live in the same world as we do. We like to sing a mix of both the old and the new and, as the words will be displayed on our large TV screens, everyone can sing along.

Please see the Portholme Church website or our Facebook page for further details.

Howden Methodist Church offers everyone a warm and friendly welcome. We have a Sunday congregation of around 14 - 19 attendees. Often visitors to Howden come along too.
We are fortunate to have two organists who play the organ or piano weekly. While we mainly use Singing the Faith hymn books, Hymns and Psalms are also available. Howden Methodist Church also has a Facebook page and Instagram account which are regularly updated and have gathered quite a following within the town.

Howden Methodist church has a carpark, for church and authorised users.

While we may be few in number, our members work tremendously hard to maintain our lovely church & garden areas and to ensure any event is well organised and provided for.

Fun fact - On 5th July 1776, John Wesley (founder of Methodism) paid a visit to Howden and preached to a large congregation in a thunderstorm near Station Road, Howden. (HEY History)
Next year (2026) will celebrate 250 years of Methodism in Howden! Why not come and celebrate with us?

We have a toy area for little ones who are equally welcome.

We invite everyone, of all ages, to come along. Something for everyone.
Come once, come every time - no commitments, just worship. We have a craft and colouring table for anyone who would like to worship extravagantly with crayons and glues sticks! Tea, coffee, juice and cakes ongoing throughout the afternoon.
Why not join us as we raise our hands, lift our voices and open our hearts in Extravagant Worship of our Lord and Saviour.

’Specials’ Howden Methodist Church has several special events throughout the year eg Harvest lunch & concert, Christmas afternoon tea & concert, Shrove Tuesday pancake lunch, which always supports a local charity.
