Howden Methodist Church

Howden Methodist Church offers everyone a warm and friendly welcome. We have a Sunday congregation of around 14 - 19 attendees. Often visitors to Howden come along too.
We are fortunate to have two organists who play the organ or piano weekly. While we mainly use Singing the Faith hymn books, Hymns and Psalms are also available. A screen and projector are available (with advanced notice) and the church has a CCLi License. A weekly offering is taken for anyone who is able to contribute to the life of our church and circuit. This may also be given by direct debit/bank transfer.

The church has a disabled toilet facility and a ramp is available for the one step into the building.
A modern, fully functioning kitchen, was kindly donated by Howden’s Kitchens.
The Church Hall, other rooms and kitchen are available for hire throughout the week.
A notice board outside and further notice boards in the entrance hall are kept up to date for information along with a weekly news sheet and monthly magazine.
Howden Methodist Church also has a Facebook page and Instagram account which are regularly updated and have gathered quite a following within the town.

Howden Methodist church has a carpark, for church and authorised users.

While we may be few in number, our members work tremendously hard to maintain our lovely church & garden areas and to ensure any event is well organised and provided for.

Fun fact - On 5th July 1776, John Wesley (founder of Methodism) paid a visit to Howden and preached to a large congregation in a thunderstorm near Station Road, Howden. (HEY History)
This year (2026) will celebrate 250 years of Methodism in Howden! Why not come and celebrate with us?

Extravagant Worship

Monthly on Saturday afternoon, 2-3.30pm

Current dates: 1st Nov, 29th Nov & 3rd Jan 2026

Led by Mark and Helen Higson. Mark is a Local Preacher and both Mark & Helen are Worship Leaders.
Helen leads worship from the Keyboard, Mark plays bass guitar and we are joined by Julian a brilliant saxophonist and Holly a beautiful young singer.

The afternoon includes worship/singing, a message, Bible reading, Testimony time and prayers and is very interactive.

We invite everyone, of all ages, to come along. Something for everyone.

Come once, come every time - no commitments, just worship. We have a craft and colouring table for anyone who would like to worship extravagantly with crayons and glues sticks! Tea, coffee, juice and cakes ongoing throughout the afternoon.

Why not join us as we raise our hands, lift our voices and open our hearts in Extravagant Worship of our Lord and Saviour.

The Upper Zoom, Bible Study, reading the Bible in community

We have two ways to try out Bible study in Howden, one is in Person on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 3pm. Meeting together over coffee and biscuits to discuss all sorts of topics with a biblical slant.

This is repeated at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays on-line.
This is via Teams Meetings - I know, the name came before the platform was decided!
This allows people from all over the circuit, country and even the world to join together to discuss the Bible.

You don’t need to be a Christian to participate, just have an open mind and a wish to hear what the Bible has to say today.

The first two session on 7th and 21st January will be on 'What is this Little Black Book?'
Further session topics to be decided:
4th and 18th February
4th and 18th March
1st and 15th April

Eggborough Methodist Church

Refurbished in 2015, the church is bright, modern and welcoming. In addition to our worship, the main hall and upstairs room are available for a variety of activities. An ideal venue for meetings and presentations with wi-fi. Also, parties for young children. The church is fully accessible on the ground floor and has a fully equipped kitchen.
Our outreach work is mainly with elderly people to prevent loneliness and isolation in our community, but we welcome all adults to our activities and events.
Unfortunately, we do not have any activities for children because we do not have the resources or storage facilities but there are activities in the village hall.

Services and Events

Unlike most Churches, our services are held on alternate Thursday mornings at 9.30am.

Monday
Coffee, Cake and a Movie once a month from September to May. Doors open at 9.45am for a 10am start. We begin with toasted teacake or a muffin with tea or coffee. The tables are set out café style to give some social distancing. We then turn our chairs around and watch the film on our big screen. Demand is so high that we also have a matinee. Start times for the matinee depend on the length of the film. We show films that have been recently released on Blu-ray DVD. A ticket is required and the cost is £4.
Contact Brenda on 07957774101 for details.

Wednesday
The Horton Wellbeing Cafe is run by Horton Housing Association from 10:00 -12:00 noon. The cafe offers a safe, friendly and supportive environment for those who are experiencing or are at risk of social isolation, loneliness and mental health issues.
They provide informal learning sessions and activities to help clients increase their confidence, develop skills, build social networks and access volunteering, training and employment opportunities. The cafes are also for those wanting to make new friends and build links in their local community.
Contact Brenda on 07957774101 for details.

Welcome Space is organised by the chapel stewards usually thanks to a grant. This activity takes over from The Horton Café at 12noon and ends at 3pm. It is very informal. There are domino groups, scrabble or just chatting. Bring your knitting or crafting. It is just a sociable afternoon. We can offer digital support. A volunteer will help you with your phone, tablet or laptop. Just drop in between 1pm and 2pm. Recently, we have been having sing-a-longs and guest singers at some of these events. This is a free event with refreshments.
Contact Brenda on 07957774101 for details.

THE WELCOME SPACE IS TAKING A BREAK FOR THE SUMMER AND WILL START AGAIN ON 2 SEPTEMBER 2026.

Thursday
Worship takes place at 9.30am on alternate Thursdays before the coffee morning. We are fortunate to have a pianist to play for our congregation of 14 to 16 people. Communion takes place monthly. We would love to welcome more people to worship with us.
